Reducing the number of homeless pets

Since opening, over 15,000 dogs and cats have been spayed or neutered - forever more impacting and reducing the number of homeless pets in our community.

By targeting low-income pet guardians, a population is reached that price, not inclination, had previously made it impossible to spay or neuter their pets. The fee for a dog surgery is $55 and male cats are $25 and female cats $30.

Statewide statistics indicate that cats are euthanized 2 to 1 over dogs. Our observations indicate that small dogs seldom need our adoption services. Therefore, we schedule many more cats surgeries than dogs.

Our free feral cat spay/neuter program, "Wild Monday", offers free spay/neuter weekly. This has become a invaluable resource to the hardworking and dedicated volunteer trappers in the community.

Funds are raised for special spay/neuter days throughout the year to offer free or 25¢ surgeries to the public.

Our high quality program and state-of-the-art facility have resulted in many local veterinarians recommending our spay/neuter services .

New Spay/Neuter Legislation in Washington State!

The following is from www.savewashingtonpets.org. Visit their website to learn how you can help get this important legislation passed.

In Washington State, a survey of shelters revealed that over 60,000 cats and dogs were reported euthanized in Washington shelters in 2005. The number of animals actually euthanized is higher, since only one third of the survey recipients responded. Between 2001 and 2005, large shelters that consistently responded to the survey reported euthanizing between 45 and 48 percent of the animals brought to them each year. The euthanasia rate has remained at these levels for the last several years.

The Sensible Solution

Spay/Neuter. The most effective and humane way to reduce the number of animals dying in shelters is a targeted, statewide spay/neuter program.

We need spay/neuter legislation to save animals' lives. Learn more about the crisis of animal homelessness and the draft bill to help address this urgent problem. Let us know that you'll join us to get a bill passed in the 2009 legislative session.

The purpose of the bill is to provide funding to assist low-income owners of cats and dogs to obtain affordable spay/neuter surgeries, and to provide for spay/neuter surgeries on feral and free-roaming cats. The bill does not make spay/neuter surgery mandatory.
